Yes, there is something common between the Haves and the have nots and that is a Setback Story. Both go through ups and downs in life and face challenges and have setbacks. What sets them apart though is how they deal with it. The haves converts their Setback Story to a Success Story whereas the Have nots convert their Setback Story into their Life Story.

The way you deal with the setbacks really makes the difference. Everyone successful has had been through tough times and have dealt with tough situations and risen to succeed. So how do they manage it? How do they overcome setbacks?

I have broken down their journey of overcoming setbacks into 5 steps that will help people to get an insight into how to overcome setbacks and turn yourself into the class of haves and not have nots.

Mentioned below are the steps that you should follow to overcome setbacks:

1.    Do not panic –

I know you were not expecting the setback and maybe not prepared for it. And now you are panicking because you think everything is over. Everything you worked for so hard with all your heart and soul is gone. This makes you more anxious and desperate. This type of reaction doesn’t allow you to focus on the solution. If you don’t think about the solution, the situation may worsen. So do not panic and focus on finding the solution for the problem at hand.

First step towards accomplishments in Life!!

2.    Acceptance

Let’s accept the fact that you have had a setback. That said, it’s not going to last forever. You would have heard the proverb, “Only thing that’s permanent is the change”. This phase too shall pass. There will be success stories and there will be setbacks. Life is full of ups and downs. If you are in a bad situation that too shall change, provided you work towards finding the solution.

3.    Analyze your reaction

Setbacks are difficult and they will have some impact on you, physically as well as mentally. What you can do is analyze how the setback is affecting you and rate it let’s say on a scale of 1 to 10. Let’s assume you are emotionally drained down due to the setback but its impact is like 4 on the scale which is on the lower side, keep going and work your way out of it. If the impact is too high say 8 or 9, it is important for you to take a step back, sit, think how would you like to deal with it and lessen its impact emotionally. A good way could be set a time frame for this exercise and then once it expires put your solutions to action. If the setback has a physical impact on your body, start doing the basics correctly like doing daily exercise and following right eating habits etc. This will ensure that you are in control and things will soon be back to normalcy from a physical aspect point of view.

Evolve by Learning from your mistakes

4.    Analyze what went wrong and Learn from it

Do take some time out to analyze and understand what went wrong and how did the setback came upon you. Was it because of you, or because of some other person or it was the situation that went out of control? If the reason for this setback was you then you have to put your researcher’s cap on and find out the exact reasons for the same. Observe and find out the steps or actions that led to it and learn how you could have done things in a better way. Evolve yourself by incorporating those learnings in your life and move ahead implementing the lessons you learned in the future course of action. If the problem was created due to a situation which was beyond your control don’t fret much over it and just move on as it was not in your hands.  I know this is easier said than done. That said, if you have realized that these situations were beyond your control and you couldn’t have done anything to stop it, then that will lessen the impact.

5.    Evolve and set new goals

You might not be where you wanted to be today, however, you have had an experience that has taught you and helped you evolve as a human being. As per your current standing, you are more experienced and know that things can go wrong and also you can deal with it. With this in mind, set new goals and use what you have learned to avoid further setbacks.

Remember, a setback will only be as powerful as you allow it to be. Life will knock you down but what will make the difference is how you get back up and be ready to make a comeback from the setback.
